The population of Sussex City is estimated to be approximately 6,057 as of the 2010 census. The area is bordered on the west by the Town of Sussex. This incorporated city has a population density of 149.9 people per square mile. Approximately 2% of the residents in Sussex City live in renter-occupied housing units. In 2016, there were five evictions in the town.

The city of Sussex, Wisconsin, is located in Waukesha County and is the 83rd largest city in Wisconsin. Its population has increased by 8.65% from the 2010 census. It is located on an elevation of 930 feet and covers an area of 7.24 square miles (20 km2).

The area has an established radical tradition, dating back to the 19th century. The Conservative Party ruled the county for most of the twentieth century. In addition, the only seats won by a non-Conservative party in Sussex were in Brighton Kemptown. But since 1997, a gradual shift to the left has occurred in the city's more urban areas. The Green Party has elected Caroline Lucas to parliament and has led the local authority in Warminghurst.

Although Sussex was part of the kingdom of Mercia, it escaped the worst ravages of the English Civil War. William, Duke of Normandy, landed at Pevensey in 1066, where he won the decisive Battle of Hastings. In the 13th century, Sussex had a great role in the Norman conquest of England. In 1066, King Harold died at the Battle of Hastings and was buried in the cathedral at the site.
