The Mohawk River forms the northwest boundary of Tuscarora City, New York. Prior to roads and bridges, the river was the only natural passage through the Appalachian Mountains and allowed for development of interior New York State. Before European settlement, this area was home to several Iroquois nations, including the Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Tuscarora. These cultures were influential in early U.S. development, including the emergence of the American nation.
