By the mid-nineteenth century, this city had grown to over four hundred people. By 1865, the population was up to 3,700 and was thriving. By 1860, the city had gas lighting in its homes. The Civil War delayed the construction of a railroad line between Little Rock and Memphis until 1871. The city grew quickly after the war, reaching a population of 12,380 in 1870 and 40,000 by the turn of the century.
