The town is a former coal mining village. The Carter Coal and Coke Co built a model town of houses, schools, and churches in the town, which is now known as Coalwood. The town was founded in 1905 by George Lafayette Carter, an American entrepreneur and "empire builder of southwest Virginia". He worked at the Hillsville General Store and sold iron ore properties in the town.

Big Creek High School and Country Corner were once located on the same corner. While the building on the other corner is now abandoned, the rest of the community is still standing.
