In the U.S. Census, the city has a total population of over 100,000 people. This figure is based on Census tracts, not neighborhood boundaries. Port Angeles City is considered an urban cluster, but does not use neighborhood boundaries as official boundaries. Instead, it uses census block groups and census tracts.

The city was first established by President Abraham Lincoln in the late 1850s and was soon dubbed the Second National City. This was after Washington, DC, which was first established in 1851. Port Angeles grew rapidly through logging, dairy farming, and crop farming. It also built its first school, church, and opera house. During the early 1900s, it had over 1,000 residents.

The median age of residents in the city is 41.6 years. Twenty percent of the population is under the age of 18, and nine percent of the population is between 18 and 24. Another twenty-four percent of residents is between 25 and 44. Another twenty-eight percent of the population is between 45-64. About 18% of the population is over the age of 65. The city has a female-to-male ratio of 49:1.

Port Angeles is home to a large Hispanic population. Hispanics make up about 8.3% of the population.
