The Arkansas City area was settled by European Americans around the 1860s. A branch of the Florence, El Dorado, and Walnut Valley Railroad Company connected El Dorado to Arkansas City and Douglass. Later, the branch line was operated by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. The branch line was discontinued in 1942, though. The population is still largely Caucasian, with about 15.7 percent of people of African descent. The number of Hispanics living in the city is 3.2 percent.
