The city of Whitharral, Texas is situated on U.S. Highway 385 in the north central part of Hockley County. It is named after an early settler, Dr. Whitfield Harral. During the 1920s, the town's first business was opened by Lee Crownover, who also owned a gin. The town was then home to three churches and a school. Other early settlers included Fred Newsom, Joe Woodruff, and Bruce Wren. The first schoolteacher was Lula Langford, and the post office was established in Whitharral in 1926. In 1930, the high school was constructed.

The crime rate in Whitharral is low compared to its neighbors. Property crimes in Whitharral are relatively rare compared to other cities in the region, and are generally low during the daytime. However, the city's population density is low, and many crimes occur during the day in retail areas. Because of this, red areas on the crime map don't necessarily mean that residents of Whitharral should be concerned about their safety.
