When it comes to Sacul, Texas, the population and the steets are as fascinating as the town itself. Founded in 1902, Sacul was originally a rail stop between Dallas and Beaumont, and later served as a freight hauler for nearby farms. The town was named after the Lucas family, but the post office had already been established there. In an effort to change the name of the town, the founders spelled it "Sacul." This was officially adopted in 1901, and the town's first buildings were a mercantile store, a bank, a sawmill, and a blacksmith shop.
The town's growth led to an increase in population, and it was soon recognized as a regional center for business. The town's first store, Jones and Baucom, opened in 1904. Other early businesses included Vandevor and Dill, a general merchandise store, and B. T. Burk, a hardware store. In 1904, J. T. Gregory moved to the city from Panola County and established a grocery and general merchandise store, which he ran until his death a few years ago. Another early meat market was Gresham Brothers, while a drug store owned by J. C. Hull was the first pharmacy. In the early years of the community, medical professionals included Drs. Charles C. Williamson, Dr. L. W. Smith, and Boucher.
