Before European explorers arrived, the area was populated by Payaya and Pachal Indians. In fact, this region was one of the Coahuiltecan homelands of many Coahuiltecans. The area was subsequently settled by Spanish missionaries. In 1685, Rene Robert Cavelier recorded his travels in the area.
