In 1872, Hufsmith was a small town on Farm Road 2978 north of Tomball. Its name was derived from a railroad superintendent named Frank Huffsmith. The town was largely Black after the Civil War, and the first school in the area was established by Anderson King. In 1905, there were fifty Black students and one teacher. The Hufsmith post office operated from 1902 until the 1980s. In 1936, the Hufsmith community had approximately 150 residents, two churches, and a school.
