Located in central Minnesota, Cold Spring is 14 miles southwest of St. Cloud along State Highway 23. It is 65 miles northwest of the Twin Cities. With a population of 3,788, Cold Spring is the sixth largest city in Stearns County. Its 2.6 square miles of land area includes 1,492 households. Highways 23 and 50 are important traffic corridors, and Interstate Highway 94 is less than 10 miles away.

The town was incorporated in 1969, but the population dropped after the town was moved to a higher elevation.
