The population of Alief City is about 44,155 people. A further 2,536 people use the trolley bus or the bus to commute to work. The remaining 800 people prefer walking. According to the US Census Bureau, these statistics were taken from the 2020 American Community Survey. The US Census Bureau does not guarantee that the data provided is accurate. This is the most recent data about the population of Alief.

The population of Alief has increased over the years. From 1980 to 1985, Alief accounted for one-sixth of the growth in the entire Harris County. This has made it difficult for the Alief Independent School District to meet the needs of the growing population. In 1985, a new fire station was built, and in 1992, a library was renamed David M. Henington-Alief Regional Library.

The Alief Southeast neighborhood is primarily comprised of apartment buildings and large complexes. The area has a higher percentage of homes with one or two-bedroom units than other neighborhoods. Additionally, the area has the highest concentration of people of Sub-Saharan African ancestry. In addition, over 90% of homes in this neighborhood are renter-occupied. This may be indicative of weak demand for real estate in the area. However, the real estate market in Alief Southeast is largely renter-occupied.

In 1970, the Alief area consisted of mostly pastureland. The main thoroughfares were gravel roads. The school district consisted of three elementary schools and a junior-senior high school. After 1977, Alief began to urbanize. A large engineering complex was built on part of the vacant land, and apartment buildings grew over the remaining land. Afterwards, the community began to develop into the upscale neighborhood of Royal Oaks.
