McLaughlin is a city in the northeastern region of Corson County, South Dakota, with a population of 663 people as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, though most Lakhota speakers refer to it as Makahleca. McLaughlin was named for US Indian Service Agent James McLaughlin, who supervised the Standing Rock Indian Agency from 1881 until 1895. In 1896, he was appointed as Inspector of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and died in 1923. The town was designated ZIP code 57642 and FIPS place code 40020.
