Sligo City was founded in the 13th century and ruled by the local Fenechus and Brehon law until the early 17th century, when English Common Law was established. During this period, courts were held regularly, with law enforcement functions carried out by the nobility and freemen. Although no records of the earliest court proceedings remain, a Dublin merchant was reimbursed for selling an out-of-date poem in the 1540s.

Sligo's architecture reflects the rich and prosperous history of the city. The 18th century architecture is reflected in the Model Arts & Niland Gallery, built by James Owen of the Board of Works in the Art and Crafts style. The Masonic Lodge on the Mall was designed by Belfast architect Henry Seaver, while the Yeats Memorial Building was designed by Vincent Craig. The Victorian-style Weston House is a neo-Gothic structure located on Union Street.
