Connellsville was founded as a township in 1793. In 1806 it became a borough. Its name comes from a militia captain, Zachariah Connell. In February 1909, the townships of Connellsville and New Haven merged and became the first city in Fayette County. The area is home to several small businesses and residential neighborhoods. Its population is approximately 5,300.

The Connellsville Area Historical Society holds the annual "Pride in Connellsville Area Poetry & Poster Contest." Students from grades four through nine prepare projects based on the area's history. Contest winners present their work to the community, including the Connellsville Area Historical Society, and the town was recognized as a Preserve America community in October 2009.
