The population of Coal Township City was approximately 9,500 in 2010. The borough was incorporated under the Commonwealth constitution on November 9, 1864 and became a city on February 21, 1949. Coal mining provided much of the town's income, and Shamokin and nearby areas were referred to as Boydtown and New Town. During the 19th century, Shamokin's industrial development was centered on the mining of anthracite coal. Coal mining companies purchased stakes in the area and built railroads to move it to markets. Despite this, the townspeople organized unions to bargain with the powerful companies.
