The town of Barnesboro was originally a tract of land rich in coal and timber. The area was first granted to Edward C. Fisher in 1835, and soon settlers began clearing the land and selling the timber they cut. Three-fourths of the timber that was cut in the area was transported down the Susquehanna River. Daniel Stannard purchased Peter Garman's 420-acre tract to develop it into a farming community. Eventually, coal mining began in the area.
