The city is situated above the Wabash River, which borders the city on the east and south. A small portion of the city also extends into Tippecanoe Township. The elevations in West Lafayette vary from 500 feet near the river to 720 feet near U.S. Route 52. This city is home to approximately 44,595 people, which is more than any other city in Indiana.

The city is working on new plans that will encourage development in the central city and discourage encroaching on suburban lands. This plan is encouraging redevelopment of existing residential and commercial areas, while promoting mixed-use development. The New Chauncey Neighborhood Plan also contains recommendations for a redevelopment plan for the entire city. The plan also supports a mix of uses, including a residential district near Northwestern Avenue.

West Lafayette is home to Purdue University, which was named one of the world's smartest small cities in 2009 by Forbes magazine.
