The city was originally part of a French colony. In 1763, the French renamed the area as the Province of Quebec. In 1795, the Connecticut Land Company purchased the area, which is now known as Olmsted Falls. The town's name derives from its founder, Aaron Olmstead, a wealthy sea captain and landowner.
