The town of New Norfolk lies 35 km west of Hobart. The Derwent River bends around the town's northern edge. It is now developed on both sides of the river. After European settlement, timbermen and farmers began settling along the eastern shore of the Derwent River.
After colonists arrived on the western side of the Derwent, the population of the eastern shore of the city was almost non-existent. Many new settlers from Norfolk Island were granted land along the coast, including some in the Clarence Plains. As time passed, mansions, cottages, and inns were built in these areas. Eventually, these settlements merged into Hobart Town, although their population was still low.
While the northern part of the Derwent River was a leader in arts and culture, the eastern part lagged behind Hobart in this development. The old Bellerive Police Station was redeveloped as a community arts centre and now houses the Community Arts Centre. The city also offers numerous recreational opportunities, including fishing and sailing. There are also eleven boat ramps and many jetties. And of course, it's possible to enjoy the river's shores.
