The city of Golva was established in 1915. At its inception, it was supposed to be the county seat of Golden Valley County, but a railroad arrived, establishing the town. Martin, the original townsite owner, suggested the name. The Golden Valley was named after the golden wheat fields that surrounded the town prior to harvest. However, most local businesses were located in the town of Burkey before 1915. However, St Mary's Catholic Church was built in Burkey in 1906. The church moved to Golva shortly after its founding.
