Lucena was founded in 1572 by Captain Juan de Salcedo. It was chosen as the capital of Tayabas province in March 12, 1901. The city's strategic location on the sea allowed it to become the capital. The town was later on made the capital of Quezon province. The city's history is dotted with many battles and bloody incidents. However, in the last two centuries, it has remained a relatively peaceful city.

The Japanese military occupation of Lucama did not spare the city. Japanese Imperial Forces occupied the city on December 27, 1941. They sent units to the city to retake key points. However, the local people and Hunters ROTC guerrillas fought back. On January 25, 1945, Filipino & American forces landed in Lucama. Throughout the war, the people of Lucena stayed in fortified defenses to withstand another assault. The liberation of the city came on April 4, 1945.
