The city's growth and development are closely tied to the suburban development of surrounding areas. Although the city's auto-oriented base is still predominant, it is home to many established neighborhoods, which are often well-maintained. Westerville is home to the OhioHealth Westerville campus, which began construction in 2014. A new residential community called Westar Place was planned for the same location at Cleveland Avenue and Polaris Parkway.
According to the 2010 Census, there were 12,663 households in Westernville City. Twenty-one percent of the households were made up of two-person households. Twenty-seven percent were non-families. And 8.0% of the population was 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years old and the gender breakdown was 47.0% male, 52.0% female. The population of Westerville was about 70 to two hundred people in the 1840s. The Westervelt family settled here in the 1850s. The city's post office was named after them. The plank road leading to Columbus passed through Westerville, and businesses began to spring up along the road. The road eventually became known as Uptown. In the late 1860s, bark streets were replaced by brick. Today, Westerville has one street and several commercial businesses.
