In the early 17th century, the area was largely under Dutch influence, but was eventually reclaimed by the English in 1664. The Duke of York had claimed Long Island for King Charles II. The Higbie family began buying land from the Secatogue Indians and developing it for farming and hunting. By the 1750s, the family owned a majority of the land in West Islip, although their name did not appear on tax rolls until 1757.

The population of West Islip City is relatively stable. The town has an excellent school system, a low crime rate, and college educated neighbors. While the area doesn't have a wild nightlife, residents are generally happy and content in this neighborhood. For many, West Islip is a great place to raise a family.
