The Washington Mills City area contains several cities and towns, and is part of the Puget Sound Region. The region is comprised of four counties, each with a different population size. The area's largest county, Snohomish, had the highest growth rate in 2018, but slipped to second place in 2018 behind Pierce County, which added 15,220 people to its population of 818,700. Washington's central Puget Sound region is currently going through a major demographic shift, as many baby boomers are now crossing the 65+ age bracket.

Washington County continues to lead the state in agricultural production, which supports a diverse and highly-skilled labor force. During the early days of European involvement, Native American populations remained low. However, during the nineteenth century, the Cherokee and Osage people hunted in the area, though neither had permanent settlements in the region. However, the region has become a center for agribusiness and remains a thriving place to live and work.
