The town was incorporated on September 22, 1871, and included an adjacent community on the east side of Wappinger Creek. This area was referred to as Franklindale at that time. In 1741, Nicholas Brewer and his brother Adolphus Brewer purchased three hundred and fifty acres of land in the city. The Brewers then built the first stone house in town near the present day Mill Street. The Mesier Homestead was later built on the east side of the Wappinger Creek. In 1742, the Brewers sold the land to Peter Mesier and Matthew VanBenschoten.
