It is situated along the Niagara River and New York State Route 18F, 7.3 miles north of the Niagara Falls. Until July 19, 1997, Stella Niagara had its own post office. However, the city still has its own ZIP code, 14144.

According to the 2000 census, the city had a population of 9,459 people. Of those, 41.4% were married couples; another 13.5% of households had a female householder who was unmarried and living alone. The rest were non-families and accounted for 40.7% of the total population. There were also 13.3% of senior citizens living alone. The average household size was 2.33 people, and the average family size was 3.03.
