Southold, NY is a small coastal town in Suffolk County. Its population is estimated to reach 22,282 by 2020. Founded in 1639, Southold is home to a diverse mix of culture, history, and agriculture. It also features many pristine beaches, historic sites, parks, and boutiques and artisan shops. And, of course, it's home to a small but mighty lighthouse.
The town of Southold encompasses more than 10 square miles and is home to a variety of waterfront homes, vineyards, coves, and harbors. The area is filled with historic buildings, mom-and-pop stores, and a beautiful opera house. Homeowners can purchase property starting at $400,000 on winding and leafy streets, and many are decorated in barn-red or other bright colors.
The city is located on the North Fork of Long Island, with Long Island Sound separating it from Connecticut. To the west, Southold is bordered by the Town of Shelter Island, and to the east, it extends to the town of Riverhead. Several small islands are also within the town of Southold.
By the eighteenth century, Southold's population had risen modestly, with most houses following similar construction methods and styles. Nevertheless, the small scale of the houses indicates that Southold's economy was a subsistence economy. A typical eighteenth-century house, Ichabod Cleveland House, may date to this period, though it is constructed on a seventeenth-century foundation. It is one-and-a-half stories with three bays. Another eighteenth-century home is the Whitaker House, which is a saltbox-style house.
