The Population & Steets in Peterborough City is not known to the public, however, the city was once the seat of Peterborough County. Located at 470 Water Street, the Peterborough County Court House houses a portion of the county's offices. Dave Smith, a member of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, holds this riding, which has grown from a village to a city.

The area was settled in prehistoric times. In the early Bronze Age, people lived in the area. They built a settlement that was later developed into a cathedral. The Anglo-Saxons established a monastery called Medeshamstede, which would later become Peterborough Cathedral. This monastery was used as the seat of Peterborough's government until the city was incorporated into the province of Ontario in 1851.

In Peterborough, the average age of a citizen is 43.5 years old. Men in the city are on average 41.8 years old, while women are 45 years old on average. The age distribution is particularly impressive. Only 14.6% of the population is under the age of 15 years. The majority of Peterborough residents are between fifteen and sixty-four years old. The elderly, however, comprise 22.3% of the population and four percent of the city's total. Finally, there are 30 people who are over 100 years old.

The population of Peterborough CMA grew by 5.7 per cent in the past five years. This rate was the fastest growth rate in the last quarter century and almost triple the rate of the previous two census reports. From 1996 to 2001, the population of Peterborough was 2.2 per cent, then 5.1 per cent in 2001 and 2.1 percent in 2006, and 2.3 percent between 2011 and 2016, according to the US Census.
