The town was established in 1803 from Dickinson. The Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad (later known as the Northern Railroad) served the town. This railroad also extended south to Tupper Lake and Santa Clara. The town is located along New York State Route 95 and U.S. Route 11, with the western town line being the border of St. Lawrence County. Its population is around 1,400 people.
