Fort Monmouth, New Jersey Statistic: Population, Charts, Map, Steets and More

A few years ago, the U.S. Army closed Fort Monmouth, a historic base in New Jersey that was home to some of the country's most important scientific discoveries, including the walkie-talkie and the first radar signals bounced off the moon. Today, the Fort Monmouth project is underway to turn the former military base into a technology hub. However, the recent superstorm Sandy prompted officials to speed up the process and reignite a debate over housing in the area.

In the early 1900s, the Fort Monmouth community was home to the US Army Chaplain Center and School (USACHCS), which trained enlisted soldiers, non-commissioned officers, and officers wishing to become Chaplain Assistants. Today, the USMAPS is located at West Point, NY. The Fort Monmouth area's population is roughly equivalent to the city of Tinton Falls, NJ.

Crime in Fort Monmouth is lower than the average in nearby towns and cities. Fort Monmouth's crime rate is lower than the national and state averages, but there are still plenty of areas where the crime rates are higher. In fact, a crime rate map comparing cities with similar populations does not necessarily indicate danger to residents. A crime map with red areas does not necessarily mean a city is dangerous for its residents.

Before the World War, Fort Monmouth City was known for its rich tomato industry. In 1942, the War Department began conducting radar experiments at Sandy Hook. In addition to growing tomatoes, the city was home to a large farm, where Mr. Dente lived. In addition, the area around Eatontown Circle was home to the Davis farm, which sold turkeys at Christmastime. The city's modern skyscrapers were constructed on land that used to be a tomato farm.
