In 1687, Thomas Powell landed in Farmingdale, New York. He purchased 15 square miles in the area, a land parcel known as the Bethpage Purchase. Powell built two houses, one of which still stands today on Merritts Road. The Village of Farmingdale first established a fire department in 1886. It became incorporated in 1904 and was home to the State Agricultural and Technical School. In the 1920s, the area began to focus on the aircraft industry.

In addition to the census data, the village's demographics are quite interesting. In 2011, it had a high college graduation rate. As of 2010, it had a population of 3,216 people.
