The first recorded history of Basking Ridge is dated 1792. In 1889, the village's Presbyterian Church operated for 80 years (1809-1889). In response to a community meeting, Rev. John C. Rankin appointed a committee to study the needs of the area. He also appointed a constitution committee to determine the best course of action. The town incorporated in 1899. The Moffett Building, now home to Weichert Realtors, was the original City Hall. From the second floor of this building, the Basking Ridge Public Library operated. One year later, the Basking Ridge Library received a gift from Dr. Robert Finley's brother Alexander. The gift of a gold pen was appreciated by many.
