The city was first settled on the east side of Pecan Bayou. It was a great place to live, but residents were forced to move north because of land-title disputes and a lack of water supply. In 1865, Brownwood was home to the Brownwood Masonic Lodge, two general stores, a log courthouse, and five dwellings. In 1873, John Y. Rankin purchased land around the city's business district and began building homes in the Rankin Addition.
