The name of Nashwauk comes from a river in New Brunswick, Canada, and is thought to be a derivative of the Algonquin language, meaning 'land in between'. At one time, this region of northern Minnesota was covered in dense forest. The Sioux populated the area first, and later, the Chippewa. Their descendants still live in this area, which has many historical landmarks, like a historic fort.

In 1885, logging was the main source of income, but only a few families stayed. As a result, the majority of the permanent settlers arrived after 1900, when mining for iron ore became a viable option. In fact, Nashwauk was one of the first mining communities in Itasca County, and its first ore was shipped in 1902. On May 26, 1902, forty acres were deeded to the Nashwauk Realty Company, who began construction of board sidewalks.
