The first development at Cosmo City is a new community for low-income residents in the Itsoseng informal settlement. It will be completed by the end of 2009, when the new neighborhood is completed. The development of Cosmo City will not only address the housing crisis in Johannesburg, but also a much larger need in the country. For example, there are currently about 200,000 people living in the Itsoseng informal settlement alone. Upon completion, it is hoped that the city will inspire similar developments in southern Johannesburg.
