In mills and factories, workers were needed to keep the machinery running. In the mid-19th century, the Irish flocked to Lawrence in large numbers, bringing their skills in construction and building. Sadly, mill work was hazardous and deaths were not uncommon. The Pemberton Mill collapse in 1860 killed 145 workers. Immigrants continued to flood into the United States and mills in Lawrence were no exception.
