The population of the city grew from seven thousand and fifty-five in the 1930s to 28,143 in 2000, according to data collected by the American Community Survey. At the time of the latest survey, 32.1 percent of residents had high school diplomas, while 27.9 percent held bachelor's degrees. Only 8.4 percent had an under-graduation, which is slightly below the state average.

The town was settled in 1635, and became part of Springfield in the 17th century. In 1800, the town was incorporated as Agawam Parish. The town was named after a former farmstead at the mouth of the Westfield River. Early in the twentieth century, farming along the Connecticut River meadows became popular, and the northern portion of the city developed as a residential district, Mittineague Mills. During the twentieth century, the downtown area became a streetcar suburb.
