The population of Topsfield City, Massachusetts, is decreasing. While many people have been attracted to this city because of its good school system, affordable housing, and close proximity to Boston, a decrease in residential development and population is also a problem. There is little space available for open space and few single-family building permits have been granted in recent years. While the population is declining, it continues to be stable.

Today, the population of Topsfield is approximately 5,700 people. The town is located in Essex County. The town is fairly compact, covering thirteen square miles of land. This area features rolling hills and winding streams. Some of the area was once home to the Agawam Indians, so the town's name is derived from their language. At first, it was called She-ne-we-medy, after the Indian tribe. Later, it was renamed Toppesfield, after a parish in Essex County, England. When the town was incorporated, the name was changed to Topsfield.

The town of Topsfield, Massachusetts was incorporated as a Town in 1650. It is located in the North Shore region of Massachusetts, and is expected to have a population of approximately 6,569 by the 2020 census. The town is home to the Agawam tribe, who claimed land north of the Danvers River and the entire Cape Ann area from the Merrimack River to the Narragansett Bay. European explorers brought smallpox to the New England region and decimated the coastal tribes.
