The Kittery Point city population is just above the state average. More than half of its population works in professional and executive occupations, while another quarter works in sales and service jobs. Manufacturing and labor occupations account for 17.0% of the city's workforce, while 9.2% are employed in government jobs. The kittery point area's first settlers settled in 1623. The town's history dates back to the first seafarers who came to the area. Although the area is densely populated, there's a coastal feel. In 1838, a wealthy businessman named Robert W. Traip purchased the land. This gentleman was a member of an old Kittery family. His surname, Traip, was spelled traditionally as "Tripe." His 1860 census listing listed him as a "gentleman" with real estate worth $2,000 and a personal estate of more than $20,000.
The city has a rich history and boasts some fine early architecture. The Sir William Pepperrell House was built in 1733, and the Lady Pepperrell House was built in 1662. In addition to the house, visitors can find a monument to her husband, William Pepperrell. His parents were from Devonshire, England, and his wife, Margery Bray, was from Saco. The family's shipping and mercantile business was a successful one, and they had many fishers and a large fleet of ships.
