The area of EAST BOOTHBAY was named after the town of Old Boothbay, Lincolnshire, England, and it is located at Welton le Marsh. In the early 1630s, the Newagens lived here. In 1666, Henry Curtis purchased the rights to settle at the site. In 1668, the town was burned down by Indians during the Second Indian War, and the city was not inhabited again for 40 years. In 1730, Col. David Dunbar founded Townsend, named after Lord Charles Townsend. The town was incorporated in 1764.
