This town was the site of two battles during the Wars of the Roses: the first occurred in 1455, and the second took place in 1461. At that time, the town had a large fish pool, which was a livelihood for the town's people. However, by the early 11th century, the abbot bought the town from the king and drained it. This may have caused some people to relocate to another town. Abbot St Albans was located near the old Roman road known as Watling Street. The abbot eventually closed the Watling Street and redirected traffic through the town.
