The area surrounding the neighborhood is known as Pacific Heights, which contains a large concentration of brownstone-style residential rowhouse buildings. Some blocks have multi-unit apartment buildings, and new condominium projects are under construction in many areas. The area is also noted for its defunct bakeries, which line Pacific Street from Vanderbilt Avenue to Carlton Avenue. A few of these are currently lofts and others have been purchased by developer Bruce Ratner.

Crystal Hudson is the founder of the Greater Prospect Heights Mutual Aid, a community organization and a former deputy public advocate. She has also worked in the advertising industry, and is the highest-fundraiser in the race. Hudson is also the first openly gay Black woman to be elected to the City Council, and has received support from LGBTQ groups. While she is an unlikely candidate, she has raised $262,256 in private and public funds.

The neighborhood is home to a large number of Orthodox Jews, and the Worldwide Headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic Jewish movement is located in the neighborhood. Another important feature of the neighborhood is its cultural diversity. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Brooklyn Museum are located nearby. In addition to Fort Greene, the neighborhood is also home to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park, and Crown Heights.
