Bowen is located on the coast of northeast Queensland, about eleven hundred and sixty kilometers north of Brisbane. It is situated on Port Denison, which is an inlet of the Coral Sea. The town is between Townsville and Mackay. It was named for the first colonial governor of Queensland, James Morril, who had become shipwrecked there seventeen years earlier.
