Sylmar is a city located in the state of California. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The population was 53,392 in 1986. The city was largely rural in 1984, but industrial development began in the southeast and the Foothill Freeway put it within 45 minutes of Downtown Los Angeles. Despite this, Sylmar still remained one of the city's least crowded areas.
