In Los Angeles County, California, lies the city of Sierra Madre. The city was incorporated in 1920 and is part of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. The city's name, which translates to "Mother Range", is Spanish in origin. The city was named in 1881 by Nathaniel C. Carter, a local physician. The term originally referred to the San Gabriel Mountains during the days of the missions.
Sierra Madre has an earthquake named for it. On June 28, 1991, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the city. The city's official tree is the Englemann oak. The city was named an All-America City in 2007.
