You may have heard of the seaside city of Morro Bay, California, but it hasn't heard of its population. Its name means "Hill" in Spanish. This seaside city, located in San Luis Obispo County, had a population of 10,234 in the 2010 census. The name comes from the Morro Rock, which was named by the Portuguese navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. The name Morro Rock comes from the fact that the mountain resembled the head of a Moor, a tribe from North Africa. Spanish speakers also used the name Morro Rock to describe distinctive, rock-like mountains.
In June 1978, Morro saw a population increase of 2.1%, while housing stock was 5,046 units. In the same year, the Las Amigas Women's Club celebrated its 50th anniversary. Charter members were present for the celebration. The club was formed in 1921 to dredge the harbor. The tailings are piped several miles down the spit and out to sea.
This city has a rich history and is located in the San Francisco Bay. It has a commercial fishing fleet and a Coast Guard station. Its most prominent rock, Morro Rock, is 581 feet tall and covers an area of eighty acres at its base. Morro Bay City was founded in the year 1870 and was first used to ship dairy products.
