Fish Camp City was established in 1954 by YMCA Director Gordon Gray. In that year, he took a group of freshmen camping in Mexia, Texas. His goal was to show the freshmen around Texas A&M University and foster friendships among them. Fish Camp became a yearly tradition, before classes began in the Fall. Afterward, Gray organized a fishing competition in the town of Mexia, where students would compete in a range of water activities.

Today, fish camps are still an attractive option for fishing enthusiasts. These rustic lodges provide comfortable accommodations and are generally cheaper than chain hotels, motels, or other lodging options. While some fish camps do not provide lodging, many still provide boat rentals and fishing guides. However, many of these fish camps have been turned into waterfront restaurants or high rise condominiums, making the area an increasingly popular choice for people seeking waterfront real estate.
