The city is a prime example of a midwestern small town, with many historical landmarks lining the streets.

In the 1950s, the city was booming. A county lake was built, and the first Ford agency in the state was located in Guin. The town's new $2 million plant opened in 1956 and is still a major source of employment in the community. In 1958, the town installed a new telephone system.
